Dance Education

Creative movement is an enjoyable and wonderful way for students to make social, cultural and historical connections, gain confidence, and enhance learning.

The dance program at Corbett Prep offers a brain-based curriculum that provides students in PreK3 through 5th grade with a safe atmosphere to explore different ways of moving as well as expanding their movement vocabulary. Dance units are developed by integrating classroom lessons and making connections to subject areas.

Students learn choreographed routines that are performed throughout the school year as well as in end-of-the-year dance recitals, classroom plays, and at Fine Arts programs.

In addition to learning structured choreography, students have many opportunities for creative movement while learning various elements of dance including dances from different cultures or different time periods.

Middle School students may pursue electives and clubs, such as Bollywood, Dance Moves, and musical theatre. And all students have the option to enroll in Community School of the Arts dance programs after school to gain experience in hip hop, competitive dance, ballet, jazz, and more.

Why Study Dance?

Dance education incorporates valuable time for physical activity into the school day, but it also benefits students emotionally, socially, and cognitively.

The nonprofit National Dance Education Organization lists these benefits for students:

  • Increased coordination, strength, and endurance
  • Emotional awareness and ability to express themselves through movement
  • Improved social awareness as students interact, cooperate, and understand themselves in relation to others
  • Cognitive development as students learn to create movement and express ideas or solve problems with a movement response
