Corbett Prep Hosts 2019/20 Admissions Open Houses

Middle School students care for fish and plants in an Aquaponics system that teaches them about ecology as well as engineering. Third and fourth graders practice Spanish and English literacy as they chat with an author in both languages about her book. The PreK3 class learns about creative expression by emulating famous artists, painting the pond in the style of Monet or photographing nature like Ansel Adams might.

For 51 years, Corbett Prep has lived its founders' dream to create an environment that would cultivate the gifts and talents of every student. See how Corbett Prep teachers put the school's philosophy into action during a tour and Admissions Open House this fall.

Corbett Prep will host Admissions Open Houses for prospective families at 8:30 a.m.on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2019; Wednesday, Jan. 22; Tuesday, Feb. 25, and Thursday, April 2, 2020.

Founders Marilyn Gatlin and Betty Anderson embraced a philosophy that happy students – respected as individuals and allowed to fulfill their needs to "play, investigate and be themselves" – were more open to learning than students who felt unhappy, tense and fearful at school.

A private International Baccalaureate school for PreK3 through 8th grade, Corbett Prep embraces an educational approach that is engaging and research based. Social-emotional learning also is a priority, with Corbett Prep serving an international model for a wellbeing curriculum. The Four Pillars of Wellbeing, which Corbett Prep piloted, grew out of a partnership that started with the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence.

Corbett Prep was voted best private school in the Tampa Bay Times "Best of the Best" 2019 People's Choice Awards.

What to Expect from an Admissions Open House

Headmaster Dr. Joyce Burick Swarzman will start each Open House with an overview of Corbett Prep, including its concept-based curriculum and thriving fine arts, athletics and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art of Design and Math) programs.

"Our vision is to make the learning process joyful and challenging as well as stimulating and productive," says Dr. Swarzman. "Our master teachers put children first, focusing on excellence and developing a positive approach to life and learning."

Middle School student ambassadors will lead Open House guests on a tour of the lakeside campus and answer questions from their perspectives. A light breakfast will be served.

Corbett Preparatory School of IDS is located at 12015 Orange Grove Drive in North Tampa and provides bus transportation from South Tampa, New Tampa, Wesley Chapel, Lutz and Westchase. Families interested in learning more about Corbett Prep are welcome to call the Office of Admissions to schedule a personal tour at any time.

Finishing the Year Strong

We have a lot of reasons for gratitude as we look back on the 2019-20 school year. The beginning of the year started strong with concerts, engaging units of study, field trips, sports and more. But the end of the year finished strong in as well with teachers discovering new ways to build and sustain connections.
