Thespians Celebrate Successful Season of Live Theatre

Corbett Prep's Middle School Thespian Troupe wrapped up a busy competition season filled with live theatre that challenged students to express themselves creatively, support one another as a team and demonstrate maturity and responsibility on and off stage.

Drama Teacher Seth Travaglino, the director of the Thespian program, shared highlights of Troupe 88622's performances with its Mainstage Play, One-Act Festival and Individual Events competition at the district and state level.

Mainstage Play

Student actors dressed as Snoopy and Charlie Brown chase a school bus across stage in a play.

Troupe 88622 began its year with its mainstage play You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown. Forty Middle School students worked on- and off-stage to bring to life this heartwarming musical based on the beloved Charles Schulz comic. Two casts of students performed four times in early October.

Judges praised the entirety of the production from the acting to the dancing to the overall attention to detail. "It didn't sound like you were simply reciting the lines," judges said. "The ensemble singing was full and supported. The set was truly stunning with striking colors and projections that enhanced every scene. The props all looked of the highest quality with great attention to detail. ... Kudos to your entire team, both cast and crew alike! Well done on this production! You brought these characters to life."

One-Act Festival

Just three weeks after Charlie Brown closed, the Thespians jumped into the One-Act Festival. Two casts performed the Disney classic The Lion King Kids three times in Corbett Prep's Farish Center before bringing the production to the district One-Act Festival in November.

"I couldn't believe that this was a middle school production," one judge said.

Sixth grade boy sings "Hakuna Matata" in Lion King, surrounded by costumed characters.

Judges praised the "head-to-toe acting," the involvement of all ensemble members and the interaction among actors and how they played off each another. They also appreciated the "creative and impressive" puppetry and costumes, the "prepared and excellent" lighting and cues and effect staging. "You should all be very proud of what you presented today!"

For their efforts, the troupe was awarded a superior rating, the highest possible rating. In addition, they earned a perfect score for their technical work (stage management, lighting, props and costumes) and were awarded for Outstanding Technical Achievement. In addition, 6th grader Alex B. and 7th grader Kayden E. were named to the All-Star Cast for their performances!

District Individual Events Competition

For the third competition of the season, 38 student actors and technicians traveled to Blake High School with 32 separate pieces.

Troupe 88622 earned 24 superior ratings and 8 excellent ratings, the two highest ratings available, in the district Individual Events competition.

Students also received the following Top Honors, awarded to the highest-scoring pieces in each category:

  • Large Group Musical: I Got You featuring Will A., Lena B., Parker B., Ryan B., Sofia C., Kayden E., Barrett H., Kene O., Kyra P., Ashley R., Riley S., Aria S., Akira V., Melodie W.
  • Small Group Musical: Mama Who Bore Me (Reprise) featuring Parker B., Ryan B., Ashley R., Riley S., Aria S.
  • MonologuePassionate Intern, Akira V.
  • Improvisation: Svetlyn I. and Fernando R.
  • Publicity Direction: Come From Away, Walter L.
  • Makeup Design: The Lion King, Ainsley R.

State Festival

After a year of virtual competition, the state Thespian festival returned in person with a theme to make Marty McFly proud: "Back to the Festival."

Thirty-six students and their families traveled to Orlando in January to participate in the final Thespian competition of the season. Students spend three days attending workshops, watching performances, laughing, bonding and growing as artists at the largest Junior Thespian Festival in the world.

Corbett Prep competed in 10 Individual Events and earned 7 superior ratings and 3 excellent ratings. In addition, seventh grader Walter L. was given Top Honors with a perfect score on his Publicity Design for the musical Come From Away. Bravo, Walter!

Congratulations to every member of Thespian Troupe 88622 (Woot Woot)! What a fantastic season! We are so proud of you!
