Continuous Improvement, Culture & Curriculum at Corbett Prep
Ever wonder how Corbett Prep teachers continue to stay innovative and inspired?
Through redefining their delivery methods, rethinking their assessments and reimagining cooperative learning structures, Corbett Prep teachers have maintained their steadfast commitment to bring joy and challenge into their daily in-person and remote classrooms of 2020.
This standard of professionalism extends far past the traditional end of school day as they continue to plan, grade and collaborate with their teams both before and after school hours. Their dedication to Corbett's academics has resulted in a diverse group of Corbett professionals meeting voluntarily for weekly schoolwide curriculum meetings. Hosted by the school's IB (International Baccalaureate) coordinators, these weekly meetings have given CP teachers the chance to truly model our IB learner profiles; they fully embody reflective thinkers!
A myriad of long and short-range goals for these curriculum meetings range from revised IB academic curriculums with clearly defined conceptual connections across grade-levels to defining our Portrait of a Corbett Prep Graduate to strengthening our teaching of executive functioning skills across the school.
Currently, teachers are meeting to reflect on one subject area each week. The conversation centers around a Corbett Prep standard: the Plus/Delta. Teachers from PreK through 8th grade dialogue with each other to share our plusses (What is working well?) and define our deltas (What can we change to improve our results?). The rich and robust dialogue between teachers has been invigorating and inspiring in the midst of our weekly grind. PreK teachers and Middle School teachers observe conceptual parallels in teaching math; primary teachers introduce online resources to eager intermediate teachers. Curriculum is discussed in detail and improved understandings begin to map our next steps forward in concept-based inquiry teaching.
As the burdens and challenges of COVID surround us all, these teachers are finding an inspiring reprieve as they reflect on how to improve today while preparing for tomorrow and beyond. While the teachers in attendance may shift slightly each week, their motivation remains the same: Corbett teachers are faithful in their commitment to deliver the very best curriculum in the most engaging and innovative ways.

Grandparents' and Grandfriends' Day Goes Virtual!
Save the Date: Tuesday, Nov. 24
It would have been easy to postpone this beloved event for another time, but the Corbett Prep team put their heads together to find a way to share the joy experienced within each classroom for grandparents and "grandfriends." Each class has been pre-recorded performing something special and will be broadcast to our families at 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 24.
The students have been working incredibly hard and are excited for you to see their talents as well as share their gratitude! This is another first for Corbett Prep and all are invited to watch!
We will send you an email on Monday explaining when and how to access these incredible performances! Please make sure to share this email with grandparents and grandfriends so they can access from wherever they are in the world. Because this is recorded, they can watch any time starting at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday.
Remember: Thanksgiving Break will now run from Wednesday, Nov. 25 - Sunday, Nov. 29. School will run as normal on Monday and Tuesday.

Middle School Digital Citizens
In Middle School, 7th Grade wrapped up their first unit on Digital Citizenship, exploring 5 main concepts regarding our use of digital media:
- My Media Use: How do we feel when we use media and what can we do to affect that in a positive way?
- Digital Media and Your Brain: What happens to our brain when we use digital media?
- Upstanders and Allies: What is my role in a cyber-bullying situation?
- Digital Drama: How can we de-escalate online drama?
- The Power of Digital Footprints: What do I want people to see when they google me?
Along the way, the students were introduced to a number of online programs that they now have in their "digital toolbox" to use at any time, including Adobe Spark, WeVideo, Padlet, Google Slides, FlipGrid and Prezi.
Finally, everyone was encouraged to watch the movie, The Social Dilemma on Netflix. This film does a wonderful job of encapsulating all of these concepts and reminding us that while we are the users of our devices, we are also the products. The movie is rated PG-13 so, if appropriate, it is highly recommended as family viewing at home.
