LEARNING CONTINUES OVER THE SUMMER THROUGH OUR NEWEST PROGRAM: NEWSELA

We're pleased to announce that our subscription to Newsela PRO has been a great addition to the curriculum throughout the school.

Newsela curates great nonfiction content including current events articles, primary sources, topic overviews, opinion pieces, biographies, and more. These come from sources such as the Washington Post, Scientific American, and Smithsonian.com.

Our investment in this program, for our teachers and students, allows easy access to current and past events and has already proven to enhance our efforts to "excite, delight and ignite" a love of literacy.

Many of our teachers have already shared about NEWSELA being used in our classrooms. For example:

  1. As a part of a class lesson
  2. As a support to deepen students' understanding of a topic or period of history
  3. As a resource students use for research projects
  4. As an extension activity or independent reading
  5. As a homework assignment

As a school, we are offering the use of this program to our students over the summer without cost. To learn more about this great resource, please join us for a short overview on Wednesday, May 29 at 8:10 a.m. in the Grand Room.

CLASS OF 2019: IB COMMUNITY SERVICE EXPO DEFINITELY IMPRESSIVE!

Corbett Prep 8th graders showcased their volunteerism and altruistic interests in the 2019 International Baccalaureate Community Service Project Expo held in the Grand Room Wednesday! The students began combining years of learning with IB expectations by asking themselves, "How can I make a difference?"

Through this process, our 8th graders came up with service projects with a purpose. This exploration brought awareness to the diverse needs for service locally, nationally and internationally, which ranged from reading to children at an orphanage in India to raising money for animal shelters. The results demonstrated their ability to take an idea and go above and beyond through action, presentation and depth of understanding. This link leads to a short video about the community project that gives examples of their commitment to making a difference in the world.

FIFTH GRADE INVITES the ENTIRE SCHOOL to a MORNING OF INSPIRATION!

A reminder that on Friday, May 24 the 5th Grade Class would like to inspire YOU and share their experiences on how they chose to make the world a better place. Their unique performances provide two options, either 8:30-9:45 a.m. or 1:30-2:45 p.m.

This open invitation highlights to the Corbett Prep community an exhibition and a performance to culminate their study that brought awareness by researching worthy causes, writing action plans, and learning the intricacies of advertisement. 5th grade experienced different ways to create awareness locally, nationally and internationally as they develop the interest and commitment to make the world a better place in some way, shape or form. This effort prepares them for the next level as they transition to the Corbett Prep Middle Years International Baccalaureate Programme.

The transdisciplinary theme for this project was Sharing the Planet: An inquiry into rights and responsibilities in the struggle to share finite resources with other people and with other living things, communities and the relationships within and between them, access to equal opportunities, peace and conflict resolution. The attachments and the flyers in your Thursday folder include Exhibition Awareness announcements from our 5th grade students. Congratulations on this major milestone in learning and giving!

PARENT FACULTY ASSOCIATION (PFA) NEWS

BY PFA PRESIDENT Kaly Srinivas

Dear Parents: Corbett Prep is incredibly blessed with world class faculty & staff. We would like to provide you with an opportunity to recognize the Teachers and Staff at Corbett Prep by inviting you to contribute to the "End of Year Teacher Gift Collection."

There are four collections. One for our Primary and Intermediate School Teachers which is class specific, a second collection for the Middle School Teachers which is a Middle School wide collection, a third collection for Specials Teachers which is school wide, and a fourth collection for our Facilities and Office/Support Staff which is also school wide.

We will collect voluntary monetary donations to purchase Corbett Prep Scrip (a "generic gift card" that they can use to purchase specific gift cards of their choice). For the Primary and Intermediate School Teachers, the donations collected are distributed evenly among each classroom's teachers. For our Middle School Teachers, Specials and Staff/Facilities, these collections go toward purchasing Corbett Prep Scrips which are distributed evenly among all of these Teachers and Staff.

Participation is strictly voluntary. Please visit https://corbettprep.ejoinme.org/eoyteachergifts if you wish to make a contribution. This link will be active through May 28.

Thank you to all the volunteers who attended the Volunteer Appreciation Assembly and Brunch on May 13. Please stop by the office to collect your volunteer appreciation gift.

Interested in Volunteering... In addition to having the world's best faculty & staff we are blessed with parent volunteers who show up to help support the teachers and our PFA. SOME END OF THE YEAR WISHES!

Dear Corbett Prep Families,

There are so many wonderful moments at the end of each school year. Yes, it is a very busy time. But it goes so fast! Just ask our 8th grade parents who will soon begin a new passage in their lives!

You may want to take a few deep breaths, grab a smile, and enjoy each moment through the next 7 days! When our students leave, our Teachers and Staff begin a week of meetings, report card completions, reflections on this year, and preparation for the next incredible year. Please look for all of this and more in your end-of-the-year mailing.

We wish everyone a great finish, with many memories to enjoy throughout our lives. Every moment at this time of year is really so special.
