Winter Season at CSA Features 2 Family-Friendly Musicals

Students in Corbett Prep’s Community School of the Arts are preparing to present the Lion King Kids and Thoroughly Modern Millie Jr. in December and January.

Lion-King-KidsDec. 8, 2016 (TAMPA, Fla.) – More than 80 students are busy rehearsing for two musical theatre productions that will take audiences from the African savannah all the way back in time to 1920s New York City.

Students enrolled in the Community School of the Arts at Corbett Prep have worked since September to bring Disney’s Lion King Kids and Thoroughly Modern Millie Junior to life on stage.

The Lion King features performers from kindergarten through fourth grade. Three separate casts will appear in six total performances Dec. 14-16, 2016.

Millie’s student actors, in fifth through eighth grade, will perform in four shows Jan. 27-29, 2017. All productions take place in the Farish Center at Corbett Preparatory School of IDS, 12015 Orange Grove Dr.

The Lion King is a vibrant retelling of the beloved Disney movie about a lion cub’s coming-of-age, with catchy music, unforgettable characters and colorful costumes. Director Seth Travaglino will showcase three casts, allowing for more opportunities for student actors to shine. Performances take place twice a day on the following dates:

  • 4 and 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14, Purple Cast
  • 4 and 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, Green Cast
  • 4 and 6:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, Aqua Cast

TMMillieIn January, audiences will enjoy the dancing and high energy of Thoroughly Modern Millie. Directed by Julie Nelson and Jarrett Koski, Millie tells the story of a small-town girl who moves to the Big Apple, encountering fabulous flappers, dashing leading men and a wicked villainess along the way. Millie’s two casts will alternate shows on these dates:

  • 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, Red Cast
  • 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, Silver Cast
  • 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 29, Red Cast

Tickets for both Lion King and Millie are available in advance for $10 each from cast members.

Corbett Prep started the Community School of the Arts (CSA) in 2002 to provide an outlet for creative expression. Classes, for everyone from prekindergarten-aged students through adults, are offered in visual art, instrumental and vocal music, drama, dance and musical theater. CSA classes take place at Corbett Prep but are open to the entire community and include individual and group lessons, innovative seminars and numerous performing opportunities.
