Primary Division

PreK3-Second Grade

Our teachers know the value of giving students an active role
in their lessons.

Physically experiencing lessons, specifically scientific concepts, helps students better understand what they have learned and improve their performance in class, according to a 2015 study published in Psychological Science.

In the Primary Division, students have numerous opportunities to take charge of their learning, whether they are engaged in projects inside the classroom or outside. Working alone, in pairs or on teams, students learn the importance of asking questions and embrace the process of trial and error as they make discoveries about their world.

What is Multi-age?

Parents of students entering first and second grades have the option of joining a multi-age class, a combination of the two grades. Students stay in that class for two years, giving them a chance to work with older role models when they are in first grade and develop leadership skills as second graders.

PreK3 – 2nd Grade and Multi-Age Grades 1/2

Overview: Goals and Purposes

Our Primary Division course of study has been developed using the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme curriculum model. Instruction is aligned with national subject area benchmarks and state standards for each area. A variety of resources and strategies designed to integrate learning and behavioral styles is used to meet and exceed these standards and concepts. In keeping with the Corbett Prep philosophy, we emphasize student inquiry, conceptual understanding, individual talents and intelligences, and cooperative and creative learning. We know students thrive academically, socially, and emotionally when they have joy in learning. The reward for teachers are their smiles that come from hard work and feelings of accomplishment.

PreK3, PreK4, Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and Multi-Age 1/2 content focus is on the mastery of Standards and Benchmarks in a positive and safe environment. We welcome taking students capable of exceeding grade level as far as they can go.

The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP), aligned with the mission of Corbett Prep, is to focus on the whole child: on the heart, the mind and the social, physical, emotional, cultural, and academic needs. Character-building and life skills share a prominent place alongside learning.

The ultimate goal is for students to make connections between content and real world situations, both locally and globally.

Curriculum: International Baccalaureate (IB) Units of Inquiry

IB Units of Inquiry provide the opportunity to incorporate both local and global issues in the content. We strive to prepare global citizens who will make well-reasoned, thoughtful, and healthy decisions throughout life. Woven throughout our program is an inquiry model adapted from the International Baccalaureate PYP program in combination with the M.O.R.E. Model (Multiple Options for Results in Education) developed at Corbett Prep and based on best practices and research in education. These inquiry lessons are correlated to National and State Standards. Throughout the year, students will work toward mastery of these learning targets through engaging themes that promote curiosity, inquiry, and a love of learning.

July Admin Update from Head of School

I have been honored to work with these two individuals who have been lifelong educators and exemplify what it means to lead students and teachers to the very best educational experience.

Mike Johnson and Jennifer Jagdmann have spent their careers becoming master educators. Corbett Prep's Associate Head for the past three years, Mr. Johnson will now serve as Associate Head of School and Elementary Principal (PreK3 through 5th grade). Ms. Jagdmann, the Middle School Division Leader, takes on the role of Middle School Principal (6th through 8th grade).
