Community Comes Together in ‘Schuy Is the Limit’ Benefit

Schuyler Arakawa April 23, 2016 (TAMPA, Fla.) – With her bright smile and love of life, Schuyler Arakawa made a lasting impression during her time at Corbett Prep. Now, her friends, former classmates and teachers are coming together to support her as she recovers from a serious accident.

The “Schuy Is the Limit” benefit, which starts at 6 p.m. April 23, will celebrate Schuyler through live performances of music she loved as well as an original composition. The performances, silent auction and reception will bring together the community and help raise money for Schuyler’s medical care The fundraiser at Corbett Prep will help offset the costs of Schuyler’s rehabilitation that exceed what insurance covers.

Schuyler, a 2007 Corbett Prep graduate, was on a rafting expedition in Colombia in February when a large rock fell from 30 feet above and landed directly on her head. The impact crushed her skull, collapsed her lungs, fractured her spine and broke her legs. Through a series of miracles and outpouring of help internationally, Schuyler was transported from Colombia to Miami and is now recovering in a rehabilitation center.

Drama teacher Seth Travaglino has put together four mini-acts reflecting some of Schuyler’s interests. Schuyler came to Corbett Prep in fifth grade and appeared in Godspell, the Community School of the Arts’ first musical, when she was in Middle School.

One of the acts will feature a medley of songs from every show in which Schuyler appeared. Other acts will showcase songs important to her or songs she listened to regularly. Another act is “Broadway backwards,” with male singers performing traditionally female roles to keep everyone smiling — because “Schuyler loves to smile,” Travaglino says. Composer and lyricist Jeremy Silverman wrote the closing song to the event, “Schuy Is the Limit,” after reading about her and her story.

The evening starts with a silent auction and hors d’oeuvres at 6 p.m. at Gatlin Hall at Corbett Prep, 12015 Orange Grove Dr. The show begins at 7 p.m. and a reception follows. A $10 donation is suggested, with checks payable to Schuyler Arakawa. Call (813) 961-3087 for information or visit
